We always look forward to participating in some of the more challenging design competitions and this year has been no different with the BBC4 – The Listening Project Pod, an international architectural competition administered by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Over 80 designs were received from 13 countries worldwide and we were thrilled to have been shortlisted amongst the top 18 entries.
A wide open entrance leads to a very welcoming shell-like structure to create an inquisitive gravity of what happens in there? With the shape inspiring thoughts of listening with its nod the cochlear of the ear.
On cursory glance, it might appear to you like a fragmented, half-intelligible piece of gobbledegook… but cut our designers a little slack and read on.
On April 23 2013, Minale Tattersfield submitted a concept design for BBC Radio 4’s The Listening Project, an ambitious oral history exercise that the BBC has undertaken in conjunction with the British Library. The Listening Project is about creating important conversational opportunities between two people - siblings, parents, couples etc. One of the key challenges was to achieve a portable but intimate space for members of the public to record their precious conversations. With a modest budget of £40,000, the Pod’s design needed to be robust, quick and easy to install. It also had to tick a number of criteria and special requirements (e.g. branding, technical, acoustics, spatial) which you can read about in more detail here.
The idea for the pod’s shape was inspired over the course of a heated brainstorming session in which one of our less vocal designer’s had a daydream about a trip to the beach…and seashells on the seashore.
